Many features of a newborn baby worry first-time parents; yet most of these are temporary and normal. In this article we cover the commonly seen benign newborn findings and, as a special topic, ear shape deformities.
Common Benign Conditions in Newborns
- Newborn rashes: Erythema toxicum (yellow bumps on a red base), milia (white spots on the nose) — resolve on their own
- Prominent/swollen breast tissue and mild vaginal discharge-bleeding in baby girls: The temporary effect of maternal hormones
- Peeling skin, mottled appearance
- Nasal congestion and sneezing: Normal due to narrow nasal passages
- Irregular breathing, hiccups, yawning
- Mongolian spot: A bluish-gray birthmark on the lower back/buttocks; it is benign
These require no treatment; still, to be sure, you can show them to your doctor at well-child check-ups.
Ear Shape Deformities and Conchal Crus Deformity
Some babies are born with various ear shape differences as the ear cartilage takes shape according to its position in the womb. These include prominent ears, insufficient folding, and conchal crus deformity (an abnormal ridge/fold in the inner curve of the ear that should not normally be there). These are structural-cosmetic differences that do not affect hearing.
Why Is the Early Period Important?
The newborn's ear cartilage is very soft and moldable in the first weeks due to the effect of hormones remaining from the mother. This window usually narrows within the first 6 weeks; as the cartilage hardens, the chance of non-surgical correction decreases.
Approach
Many mild deformities correct on their own and observation is sufficient. For pronounced deformities, however, non-surgical ear molding methods started in the newborn period can give very pleasing results; for this reason, when noticed, early evaluation and, if necessary, referral to the relevant specialists is recommended. If too late, the only option may be surgical correction at school age.
When to See a Doctor
Show an ear shape deformity at the earliest possible time (the molding window is narrow). In addition, if the external ear canal is not visible at all, or if there is a skin tag/pit in front of the ear or accompanying facial asymmetry, hearing evaluation and further examination may be needed.
