Diaper rash develops when the combination of moisture, friction, and contact with urine and stool breaks down the skin barrier in the diaper area. Almost every baby experiences it at least once; with the right routine it can be both prevented and healed quickly.
The Golden Rules of Prevention and Treatment
- Frequent diaper changes — do not let a wet diaper sit; even more often during episodes of diarrhea.
- Cleaning with water: When possible, use warm water and a soft cloth; if wet wipes are used, they should be fragrance-free and alcohol-free.
- Dry completely — by patting, not rubbing.
- Barrier cream: Apply a thick layer of zinc oxide cream at every change. Do not scrape off all of the previous cream; refresh it on top.
- Diaper-free air breaks: Leaving the area open for 10-15 minutes a few times a day clearly speeds up healing.
- Use the right diaper size; it should not be too tight.
How to Tell Apart a Yeast Diaper Rash
A rash that lasts longer than 3 days, is bright/vivid red, also affects the skin folds, and has dotted "satellite" lesions at its edges is usually candida (yeast) → it will not clear with standard diaper rash cream and requires an antifungal cream (on a doctor's recommendation).
See a Doctor
- A diaper rash that does not improve within 3 days
- Blisters filled with fluid or pus, open sores, bleeding
- An accompanying fever
- A rash spreading beyond the diaper area
Diaper rash becomes more frequent during periods of antibiotic use and diarrhea — barrier care should be intensified during these times.

Frequently Asked Questions
With proper care, a simple diaper rash improves noticeably within 2-3 days; a rash that does not improve in 3 days or that is bright red with satellite lesions around it may be a yeast infection.
It is not recommended; powder can clump with moisture and increase irritation, and inhaling it is a risk to the lungs. Zinc oxide barrier creams should be preferred.
