A daycare-age classic: fever, canker-like ulcers inside the mouth, and a rash on the palms - soles of the feet - around the mouth. Caused by coxsackieviruses, this illness is highly contagious but mostly harmless.
Symptoms
- 1-2 days of mild/moderate fever, fatigue, sore throat
- Painful canker-like ulcers inside the mouth → difficulty swallowing, increased drooling, refusal to eat
- Red spots/blisters with a grey-white center on the palms, soles of the feet, and sometimes the buttocks
- Nail peeling may appear 2-6 weeks after recovery (this is harmless)
Home Care
- Cold and soft foods: custard, yogurt and ice cream ease mouth pain; avoid acidic and hot foods
- Monitor fluid intake closely — the greatest risk is dehydration
- Paracetamol/ibuprofen for fever and pain at a weight-appropriate dose
- Antibiotics do not work
Preventing Transmission
The virus is shed in the stool for weeks: hand washing after diaper changes, wiping down toys, and using separate towels are critical.
See a Doctor
- Not urinating for more than 6 hours, no tears when crying (dehydration)
- High fever lasting more than 3 days
- Neck stiffness, excessive drowsiness, unsteady walking
