Pharyngitis is inflammation of the mucosa of the pharynx (the back wall of the throat). The difference from tonsillitis lies in the area affected: in tonsillitis the tonsils are involved, while in pharyngitis the pharyngeal wall is at the forefront; the two are often seen together (tonsillopharyngitis).
Symptoms
- A burning, stinging, or dry sensation in the throat
- Pain when swallowing
- Mild-to-moderate fever, fatigue
- Accompanying runny nose and cough (suggesting a viral cause)
- Redness and granules on the back wall of the throat
Causes
The vast majority of cases are due to viruses such as adenovirus, rhinovirus, and influenza. Beta streptococcus, dry air, postnasal drip, and cigarette smoke are other causes.
Treatment
Viral pharyngitis resolves on its own within 3–7 days: plenty of warm fluids, warm honeyed drinks if age-appropriate (over 1 year), gargling with salt water (in older children who can do so), and a pain reliever if needed. If strep is suspected, a test is performed; if positive, antibiotics are given.
When to See a Doctor?
- Fever above 38.5°C lasting longer than 3 days
- Inability to swallow saliva, difficulty opening the mouth, severe one-sided throat pain (suspected abscess)
- Difficulty breathing, noisy breathing
- Sore throat together with a rash (should be evaluated for scarlet fever)
